RYAN CHETTY
The artist’s interest in art developed at an early age through exposure to the work of his father and uncle, both artists.
Ryan Chetty initially studied at the Seychelles polytechnic of Visual Art, securing a Diploma and A level in Fine Art.
During the period 2008 - 2013 Chetty further developed his interest in art through a corporate scholarship at M.S.U University of Baroda in India and received a B.A. At this time he became interested in Indian architecture, and was inspired by the way truly massive, vast spaces overwhelm people - making them feel helpless yet also inspiring a sense of the sublime. By using a variety of media and expanding the size of his work, Chetty was able to express this feeling while also refining his own visual language.
The use of a strictly constrained palette of black, yellow ochre, and sienna allowed Chetty to adopt a different compositional approach, evoking a sense of mystery and the unknown, with the intention to make the viewer feel perplexed.
Chetty intends for his work to address the various global issues of concern that many individuals endure and use this to raise awareness and elicit a more sensitive, compassionate, and caring perception towards the personal lives of viewers, as well as for others in the Seychelles context. His recently deployed technique of image layering complements the artist’s initial fascination with enormous architectural spaces. "Art never sleeps; our minds constantly wonder how to piece ideas together to visually convey what we cannot express verbally."
