BARRY GERTRUDE
Barry Gertrude was born in Seychelles in 1966 and was awarded his B.A. Fine Art, from the University of Mauritius/ Mahatma Ghandi Institute.
He is currently a full-time lecturer at the Seychelles Institute of Art and Design and has worked in the field of education for almost 30 years.
Gertrude is primarily a painter but he also creates sculptures and is an experienced musician. His work explores various formats and at times edges into sculpture. He likes working with mixed media, in particular a combination of painting, collage and drawing, and enjoys the process of experimentation - leading to new, innovative ways of working.
The physicality of the media he uses is important to Gertrude and texture plays a significant role in his work. The artist has diverse interests but his work almost always features figurative elements. He enjoys working with topics revolving around human nature and society. He uses his art to share his personal way of seeing the world.
Barry Gertrude was awarded the CTS prize for best personal artistic development at the 2022 Seychelles Biennale of Contemporary Art.
