JUSTIN REDDY
Justin was born in Seychelles in 1962.
Justin was awarded a BA in Fine and Applied Art in 1991 by the Aristotle University, Greece. He has worked as an art educator, mainly in the further education sector in Seychelles, yet has consistently realised personal work throughout the last 40 years. Reddy’s work is mostly two dimensional, with relief and assemblage also featuring in his portfolio.
Reddy describes himself as an artist with the heart of a conservationist, with the desire to help preserve and protect the environment. Dedicated to recycling through his art, Reddy challenges the concept of an object becoming useless after its conventional lifespan in service. He says; “After the products lose their value they end up on a garbage, litter, rubbish or waste pile. I would argue that most things do not need to be labelled as such, they can regain value, for - with a little looking closely at something - brings about love and care for it and it can be given a new lease of life possibly in a different form. This reverence for the objet trouve informs Reddy’s assemblage works, where he uses found materials ranging from cardboard to newspaper, old tin cans, tyres, buttons, shells, wires, pebbles, bottle caps, sand, discarded metal, glass, wood and plastic, joined by stitch, screw, nail or weld.
