PAUL GILBERT

Paul Gilbert is from Le Niol in the north of Mahe.  He paints mostly his environment. With his intense admiration for nature and its different shapes, forms, and colours and, his acrylic paintings, give special attention to the light and shadows that he sees. He studied fine arts at the School of Art and Design and studied art education in the School of Education and Community Studies at the Seychelles Polytechnic.

His paintings reflect the Creole way of life, including scenes of Creole houses, fishermen, beaches, traditional dances, (Sega, Moutia) seascapes and landscapes.
He began my career as an Art Teacher at Secondary level. After four years he became a School Counsellor, however, he never stopped drawing and painting. In 2008 he made a key career change and became a full time artist.

He held his first solo exhibition in 2008 and since then has participated in numerous group shows. He comes from a family of artisans. He was born and grew up on the famous La Digue Island where you can see the world’s most beautiful and most photographed beaches. Paul was most certainly inspired by his natural surroundings and the many creative activities that went on around him.
