“INTO THE LIGHT”
An exhibition of recent work by La Digue artist Birgitt Lubkemann.
Dates: November 9 2024 to December 28 2024
An exhibition of paintings by La Digue artist Brigitte Lubkemann, titled Into the Light, opened on Friday evening at the National Library Arts Gallery in Victoria in the presence of the Indian High Commissioner, Mr. Kartik Pande, the Leader of the Government Business, Hon. Bernard Georges, the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Culture, and other invited guests.
This profoundly personal exhibition charts the journey of love, hardship, and resilience shared by Brigitte and her husband, Al vis Waye-Hive, over two years. Much of their journey took place in Germany, where Alvis faced a life-threatening illness.
Throughout this ordeal, Brigitte stood by his side, offering not only her love and care but also a creative outlet through which she processed the trauma and uncertainty of their experience.
The exhibition’s title, Into the Light, reflects the emotional arc of the couple’s shared journey. Through nearly 200 paintings, Brigitte captures the progression from darkness to light—beginning with her husband’s terminal diagnosis, his intense treatments, and, eventually, his recovery. The works offer a visual narrative of hope, healing, and renewal, transforming from dark, muted tones into vibrant colours.
